Zeus 1.8 has been released!
It's been a long time coming - the biggest gap yet between releases - but Zeus 1.8 brings the BBS into the age of broadband with native Telnet support, alongside a big round of file base and security fixes. Existing users can upgrade from Zeus 1.7 to 1.8 for free.
Here is a brief list of the bigger changes since 1.7:
Native Telnet Support
- TelnetConnector and TelnetListener - Zeus finally supports native Telnet, alongside the existing serial/modem lines. TelnetListener answers incoming connections on a TCP port and passes them to a line; TelnetConnector then behaves just like the classic Connector. Run as many TelnetConnectors as you have telnet lines.
- TelnetS (secure Telnet over TLS) is also supported, using the optional AmiSSL v5 integration. Prefs/Lines gains certificate generation.
- BBSLine's pipe buffers have been increased from 1KB to 32KB per pipe, needed to give adequate file transfer performance over Telnet - the old size was tuned for 33.6k modems.
File Base Engine
- Fixed a long-standing performance bug in fbzeus.library: deleted file records were expunged - the more you deleted, the slower uploads got. Saving and describing files is fixed accordingly.
- fbTrim() (and the FileRebuild PURGE option) is much improved
- fbSaveFile() is now atomic and performance is massively improved on large filebases.
Mail and Message Tools
- ZPOP3Xfer supports POP3S (POP3 over SSL/TLS, port 995, requires AmiSSL v5), and multiple mail configurations.
- ZMP gains a CONFIGTEST switch to sanity-check a configuration without running any tasks - handy for scripted setup checks.
New: SysOpReport
- A new daily SysOp report tool for scripts: lists users and files pending validation, freshly auto-created message areas, areas not in any SIG, and checks TelnetS certificate expiry (warning under 30 days, critical under 5 days or already expired).
Security and Documentation
- A security review of zeus.library, zmf.library, Zeus, BBSLine, ZMailer and ZMP turned up and fixed several buffer overflow issues.
- zeus.guide has been substantially reorganised and extended, with new sections covering Telnet, file catalogue maintenance and more.
