Upcoming Zeus 1.9 features
With Zeus 1.8 out of the door, work on Zeus 1.9 is already well under way. 1.9 will be a much larger release - 1.8 was finding my feet, and 1.9 is where the intervening two decades of experience and growth are applied. Where 1.8 brought Zeus onto the internet with native Telnet, 1.9 is about adding features I've wanted since the start and modernisation, too. An event system tying the whole of Zeus together, internet bridges, AI-assisted tools, native replacements for 3rd party tools, and a lot more speed and stability.
Zeus 1.9 is a work in progress, so everything below may change before release. Here is a look at what's been done so far:
The Event Bus
- A new 1.9 subsystem that lets any part of Zeus, or any script or compiled tool, publish a message about an event onto a named channel, and have other parts react to it without either side knowing about the other. Think of a modern message queue like RabbitMQ, but very Amiga and very Zeus.
- As well as discrete events, the Event Bus supports data streams that other processes can consume, and channels can be deleted or set to expire automatically.
- The Event Bus is the realisation of an idea that started life in 1999, when we were thinking about what a BBS could become. It's a foundation for other projects, and the first of those are already built on it:
- ChatDoor - a new cross-node chat door, built entirely on an Event Bus channel.
- IRCBridge - connects out to a real IRC server and relays ChatDoor traffic to and from a configured channel.
- SessionLogger - transcribes a caller's whole session to a timestamped log file under <Logs>Sessions/.
- WebhookPost - posts an event to a Discord/Slack-style webhook over HTTPS.
Internet and Telnet
- Zeus Web Telnet - a companion app for Linux that gives callers a full ANSI Telnet (and Telnet over TLS) terminal in their web browser, with ZModem support and a control code menu. Callers can reach your BBS from a modern machine without installing a terminal.
- TelnetListener gains per-IP rate limiting, and a HAProxy-style trusted-proxy mechanism so Zeus Web Telnet can pass on the caller's real IP address. Scripts can read it with the new GETCALLERSOURCE ARexx command.
- ztelser.device - a Zeus-native replacement for the third-party telser.device, giving a "serial.device over the internet" with optional TLS encryption and rate limiting. It isn't a replacement for TelnetConnector - it's for uses like running a traditional FidoNet mailer such as ZMailer over the internet. It comes with a preferences editor and a ZTelserStatus command, and will also be released separately. The big news with this is its stability and reliability compared with telser.device.
ZMailer and File Transfers
- ZTelser is so much faster than telser that it exposed several crashing bugs, now fixed. ZMailer has had divide-by-zero fixes in Hydra and XPR, and now supports xprzedzap 3.51 rather than depending on the 1992 v1.0.
- A crash bug in xprzedzap 3.51 has been fixed, and Zeus 1.9 will include an adopted xprzedzap 3.60, with a separate Aminet release to follow.
- The result should be a much faster and very stable FidoNet mailer, tested extensively between an A1200 running Zeus and ZMailer and an A4000 running Trapdoor, both over ZTelser.
- XprXfer now times out a ZModem transfer that never starts after 30 seconds, instead of holding the line for 30 minutes, and reports duplicate uploads to scripts as RC=25 from the UPLOAD ARexx command.
- zmf.library has a much stronger MSGID algorithm, after the 2002 one was found to have a 1 in 8 chance of a collision when posting messages in the same second.
AI Support
- AIControl and the new zai.library introduce an LLM AI support framework into Zeus, with Prefs/AI for the SysOp to configure AI provider keys, supporting multiple providers.
- ZTextEditor - a brand new ANSI text editor dedicated to Zeus. As well as being a new editor built as a dedicated Zeus door, it adds optional AI features such as auto-complete, rephrasing and web lookups.
SysOp Tools
- CronControl - Zeus's own crontab-syntax job scheduler, at feature parity with Ron Schnell's excellent cRon, and now going further, such as publishing messages to Event Bus channels.
- ZLogWatcher - a "tail -f" for your BBS. Open it on the Control screen, pick the logs to watch, snapshot the windows where you want them, and keep a real-time eye on what's happening, with colourised dates and log fields for readability.
- CronControl, EventControl and AIControl all register with Commodities Exchange for easier monitoring and control.
- ModifyZeusStartup - a new Installer tool that adds entries to Zeus's startup list, so new Zeus features and tools can be integrated automatically.
ScriptSets
- The default ScriptSet shipped with Zeus will be based on our own BBS's scripts - where all our changes are made - including a new listview message reader, BrowseMsg.
- A new demonstration AmiExpress ScriptSet presents Zeus as a conference-based AmiExpress ("/X") board.
- Enhancements include little fixes that help on modern internet facing systmes: for example, the login process now times out the user name prompt after 30 seconds, with better user name input handling generally.
Documentation
- A new printed manual is in production - the first since 1996!
- zeus.guide has new chapters on Writing a ScriptSet and Control Codes, and a new section on the user's event log. It is now wrapped at 80 columns with @SmartWrap, so a single zeus.guide suits both OS2 and OS3+ AmigaGuide viewers.
