SlamMail 1.0 beta 1 available
SlamMail, our FidoNet mail processor and reader for the Amiga, is now available as a public beta. SlamMail goes back to 1997; this release is the result of finishing what it was always meant to be. The goal was simple: do everything Mail Manager does, so that a Mail Manager user can move across without losing anything, and then go further.
This is a beta, so back up your mail and your configuration. Here is what is in it:
Mail Processing
- Unpacks bundles, checks packets and puts every message in its area, catching dupes and sending anything it can't place to a Bad area. PassThrough areas, routing, AKAs and all the netmail flavours are supported.
- Scans and packs outgoing mail, and mail passing through you for the systems you feed, into packets and bundles for your mailer.
- AreaFix, node groups, an address book of the systems you deal with, file attaches, file requests and .TIC files.
Reading and Writing
- Netmail and echomail with threads, quoting, drafts, origins, taglines, filters and message flags.
- Nodelist lookups from the write window, using traplist.library.
- Time zone support.
Built for Large Areas
- SlamMail keeps its messages in its own indexed message base. An area of 100,000 messages opens in seconds and takes only a few megabytes of memory, because only the part of it you are looking at is read.
- It has been tested with areas of that size.
Coming from Mail Manager
- SlamMail answers Mail Manager's ARexx commands, with the same arguments, stems and return codes, so your Mail Manager scripts run unchanged. The ARexx port name is configurable, so it can sit alongside a real Mail Manager.
- MM2SlamMail.rexx converts your Mail Manager configuration: addresses, nodes, areas, groups, tick areas, origins, signatures, user menus and custom functions.
- User menus and custom functions work as Mail Manager users expect. Note: SlamMail does not read Mail Manager's message bases
Languages
- SlamMail follows your Locale preferences and speaks English, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Polish and Welsh. The translations are machine generated and haven't been checked by native speakers yet - if a word reads wrongly in your language, please tell us (and apologies for mistranslations!).
Documentation and Installation
- A full AmigaGuide manual and an ARexx reference, both opened by the Help key at the window you are in. There is a chapter just for people coming from Mail Manager.
- An Installer script installs a new copy or upgrades an existing one without touching your configuration or mail, and a first-run setup window asks for your name, address, uplink and directories.
About the Beta
- SlamMail 1.0 beta 1 runs unregistered. A registration, which gives you a personal key file, will support ongoing development.
